When you think of Rock-n-Roll in Iowa back in the 60's the name “The Fabulous Uniques” comes to mine. This Livermore , Iowa based group is responsible for putting Northwest and North Central Iowa on the Map in the 60's playing your favorites from the 50’s & 60’s. The Fabulous Uniques played together from 1963-1967. The Fabulous Uniques got their start in 1963 when Elden Landolt of Gilmore City, Tim Cox of Gilmore City brought together , Dennis Naughton of Pocahontas,
George Arnold of Mallard and Rick Wind of Humboldt to form the original Fabulous Uniques.
On July 26, 1963 they were the opening band for the EVERYLY BROTHERS at the Laramar Ballroom - Fort Dodge, Iowa. It was soon after the formation of the group, that they made their 1st 45 record on the Bangar label, Baby Don’t Cry (1:46) and Little Angel (2:13). In 1964, the Uniques were presented an outstanding service citation from The National Ballroom Operators Association for having a band "of neat appearance, providing a wholesome form of entertainment and top quality of danceable music." The Fabulous Uniques group with a local flavor reunited during Livermore Days on Saturday evening, July 20, 2002. Current Band members include Elden Landolt of Livermore, Tim Cox of Ankeny, George Arnold of Kansas City, MO., Harold Powell of Atlantic, and Scott Dahl of Dakota City.
The Fabulous Uniques have donated their talent and time to play for many of the Iowa Rock-n-Roll shows held all over Iowa.

Profile: Tim Cox – Guitar
One of the founding members of the Uniques in 1962. The Uniques initially consisted of Elden Landoldt Guitar and Vocals, Denny Naughton Bass and Vocals, Rick Box Drums and myself, Guitar and backup vocals. George Arnold joined the band on Keyboard and vocals in early 63’. Rick Wind became the drummer the fall of 63’. We recorded “Baby Don’t Cry” and “Little Angle” on BANGAR records the spring of 64’. Marlys Kinney sang with the band the summer of 64’. Harold Powel replaced Denny Naughton on Bass in September of 64’. The band cut back to a quartet when Eldon went to the Air Force in spring of 65’ and the Original version of the band broke up late Summer of 65 due to college for several members. I revived the band with Tom Arnold (Guitar and Vocals), Dave Arnold (Keyboard and Vocals), Bruce Reese (bass), Mike Godell (Drums) and Maury Haggin (vocals) in late 65’ and that group played until the fall of 66’. Played in “The Good Things” from the fall of 66’ thru fall of 67’. Other members of that group were, Jack Yates Drums & Vocals, Larry Lind Bass, Al Sunderland keyboard and Vocals, Wayne Fevold Guitar and Trumpet and myself keyboard, guitar & vocals. Have been in Data Processing since the spring of 1968, and have been with Allied Insurance Co. since January of 1978 and I am currently Director of Mainframe Computer Systems. I met my wife and best friend, Sandy at Allied and we married in September of 1995. I have continued to play music for my family, friends and myself.

Profile: Elden Landolt - Guitar
May 22, 1965 was the last job I played as one of the “Fabulous Uniques.” I left for the Air Force on May 24, 1965. In 1966 I joined a band in Amarillo, TX. While stationed there playing approximately 9-10 months, mostly 5-6 nights a week. I was reassigned to Thailand and stayed 1 year there, also playing in a band for about 6-9 months. Upon returning to the states in 1968, I was discharged and went home to Gilmore City where I worked for a small grocery store and resumed playing with a small band (3 piece). Met the “girl” of my dreams while playing one night in Marathon, IA and got married in 1969. After moving to Waseca, MN in 1969 I was employed in a large grocery chain and in 1970 started playing bass in a country but mostly “rock” band for about a year and a half. In late 1972 I joined another band and resumed playing guitar with another rock-n-roll band until about 1974-75. We then moved back to Iowa when I bought my own grocery store in Livermore, IA and I did not play in a band (rock) until about 1981. In 1976 I was asked to join a group and we played “country” music in churches for masses and other type of church services. This lasted until about 1990 when the group finally quit playing due to children, etc. From 1981 until about 1997 I played in 3 different groups. The last one, from 1987-1997, called “Caravan” and then changed the name to “Tight Rope.” Before disbanding in 1997 due to work schedules, etc. Since 1997 I have not played in a band except for occasional “jams” with some blues musicians. Getting the “Uniques” back together has been a really great experience and hope we will be able to play a few “gigs” which I am sure will happen with some hard work.
Profile: Scott Dahl – Drums
I’ve always loved hearing live music. I can remember my parents taking me to dances to hear bands as early as five years old. I’ve never had any lessons on how to play correctly, so I’ve managed to stumble through most tunes by ear. I got my first “real” drum set for Christmas when I was eleven (thanks ma) and then had my first job with a “real” band when I was fifteen. All I had to do was find a ride (thanks Judy) to get there. That first band was “Sawdust” and after a few member changes became “Nashville Express”. They might sound kind of corny but we played some classic honky-tonk tunes and we didn’t play them all that bad. I’ve always had fun playing music with brothers and sisters of the Shimon family from Gilmore City and they have sort of taken me in over the years. There are too many short-lived bands that I’ve been part of to mention but my longest stint was playing with “Tightrope”. That all ended in 1997 when my wife Deb (of currently 11 ½ years) gave birth to our first child, Tyler. Five years later we added Madolyn to the mix and for some reason I felt it was time to Play Music again. Tim Cox and Elden Landolt were both friends of mine and when Rick Wind decided not to travel down from Minneapolis for the “Fabulous Uniques” shows they asked if I was interested. I consider myself to be the “Unique Unique” since I’m the only member who wasn’t around in the sixties. Parting words: Music is music – enjoy it all, AND, Teach your children who Jesus is, maybe they’ll grow to appreciate him, I did.
Profile: Harold Powell - Bass
Bassman for the Uniques from 1964 to 2003. I started playing guitar in 1959 at the age of fourteen. At sixteen I was playing with a band called the Regals. In 1963 I switched to bass and joined a band called Sammy Jon and the Nomads until 1964 when I got a call from the Uniques telling me they were to open for the Everly Brothers and their bassman was leaving for college and they needed a bass player. It took me about two seconds to make up my mind.
It was a wonderful break for me because everyone in the band was a great guy and we all hit it off. I played with the Uniques for about two years. After Eldon left we played for a while but I got a call from the Thunderbolts whose bassman was going to bootcamp for six weeks and then would be in the reserves and would rejoin the band. After six weeks we all got along so well that the former bassman came back and played guitar and they kept me on as bassman. The Thunderbolts were together until 1968 opening shows for many big stars and playing dances in six states. In 2000 the Thunderbolts were inducted into the Iowa Rock n Roll hall of fame. In 2002 I was asked to play with the Uniques again as they were regrouping and playing a few jobs. This turned out to be a great thing for me because I am now having a ball and spending time again with a bunch of great guys and their spouses. Also my wife Patty and I were married in 1963 about six months before I joined the Uniques, so she has been with me through all of this. What a wonderful gal.
Profile: Randy Elwood - Keyboars
I started singing with a band called "Reward" in 1978 in the southwest Iowa area. We played mostly rock and roll. I learned to play the keyboards and In 1979 I started playing with a group from Red Oak called "Haze" we did alot of 60's head music. After the breakup of that band I joined a group called "Nightwing". We played pretty much top 40 music in Southwest Iowa and Northwest Missouri. That lasted for about ayear and then I got married to my wife and joined the Army 1982-1992. I started playing with the Fabulous Uniques in October of 2004 and am having a wonderful time making music again. Thanks guys for making music.
Past Members Bio’s
Profile: George Arnold - Keyboards
In the fall of 1963, I joined the Uniques as the keyboard player and vocalist. I had previously been playing guitar and singing with my two younger brothers Tom and Dave as the Arnold
Brothers. I played until 1965 when I moved to California. I returned in 1967 to play with another
grouping of the Uniques consisting of Dave Arnold on drums, Tom Arnold on keyboards, Tom Hanisch on bass and Dave Lady on lead guitar. I played guitar. As far as I know, after 1967, the band no longer played. I performed with my brother Tom as a duo. I joined a group called
the Kaylin Bros. as the bass guitarist for a year and moved to Sioux Falls, SD. in 1972. I worked with several groups for the next ten years including the Ransom Bros., the Upson Downs, Stan Gunn Show, North Spring, and a group called George, as well as playing the Lakes area with Bob York in a group called Two out of Three. I spent a couple of years doing a single act based out of Sioux Falls. In 1983, I moved to Nashville, Tn. to pursue the music further. Several songs have been placed with a publisher. I've cut one record with the Uniques, a record with the Arnold Bros., a single with the Kaylin Bros., and a single and album with the Upson Downs. I've
continued to play and sing for family and friends, as well as enjoy the memories of playing with great bands and musicians over the years.
Profile: Dennis Naughton – Bass Guitar and Ventriloquist With the Denny and Benny Show
Denny left the band for college in Omaha in September of 1964. He continued to play bass with an Omaha band, but eventually concentrated on his studies and sold his bass and amp. In Omaha, Denny met Dean Short, through a referral from Stew Scott, who had appeared in 1962 at the Pocahontas County Fair. In August of 1962, Scott introduced Denny to Ken Spencer, noted Minneapolis vaudeville ventriloquist and ventriloquist figure maker. When they met at the Spencer home, Ken had a dummy he had carved for another ventriloquist, who couldn’t come up with the $115 price tag when the figure was completed and ready for delivery. Denny bought the dummy on the spot. Back at the Minneapolis hotel, Stew trimmed a woman’s wig to give Benny his Beatle haircut, which Benny still wears today. Dean Short, a puppeteer, operated a music studio out of his home in Omaha, where he taught 60 students a week. As a booking agent, Dean managed acts who performed for school show tours. Denny visited Dean’s studio with Benny several times during the fall of 1964 for some technique pointers. Dean taught Denny a few standard ventriloquist jokes, a couple songs and comical bits.
Profile: Richard Wind's - Drums
Richard Wind graduated from Humboldt High School in 1964. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelors of Arts degree in instrumental music education. He taught music in Northfield Public Schools in 1968 and soon after enlisted in the US Air Force performing in the Strategic Air Command bands stationed in Omaha Nebraska and at Riverside California. After completing his service he earned a Master of Arts in Performance from California State University in Riverside, California. While living in Los Angeles, he performed professionally in community Orchestras and on occasion performed with the La Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1977 he was a recipient of the Serge Koutskivisky Fellow and performed at the Tangelwood Summer Institute of Music in Lennox, Massachusetts. Deciding upon teaching as a career, Richard returned to Minnesota and has been teaching Band and Orchestra in the Faribault Public Schools for 23 years. He has been married to his wife Ann for 27 years and has two children, Emily and Mike.
